Critical edition by the musicologist Robert Orledge, professor at the Liverpool University, the author of several essays on Debussy, among which Debussy and the Theate (Cambridge University Press), on the composers operatic world. This volume firstly proposes the surviving parts of the incidental music composed by Debussy for Shakespeares King Lear in the 1904 Paris production. Then the volume includes the surviving musical fragments for two one act operas on stories by Edgar Allan Poe: Le Diable dans le beffroi (The Devil in the Belfry) (1902 1903) e La Chute de la Maison Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher) (1908 1917). Introductory text on the genesis of the operas and critical notes in French and English, variants from different sources, appendixes with facsimile reproductions showing composers emendations and second thoughts. Of special significance are the three libretti with all the manuscript changes Debussy successively prepared by Debussy for La Chute de la Maison Usher.
